More Than Just a Lodge
When we first opened the doors of Te Karaka Lodge, we had a simple vision: to offer guests an authentic New Zealand farmstay experience without compromising on comfort or warmth. What we didn't fully anticipate was just how far that vision would reach — not only into the hearts of our guests, but into the wider Waikato community around us.
Since welcoming our first guests to the rolling hills of Te Karaka Station, something quietly wonderful has been unfolding. More visitors have found their way down those winding country roads, past the limestone strata and the nikau palms, and into this pocket of rural New Zealand. And as they've come, so too has a ripple of opportunity for the people and businesses that make this region so special.
A Growing Web of Connection
From the very beginning, we've believed that a truly great stay is one that's deeply rooted in its place. That means the whisky in your glass has likely come from artisanal distilleries around New Zealand, as well as from Pukeno, the town just a 1-hr drive from us. The mushroom on your plate may well have been picked that morning — from Mercer Mushroom, which you might have driven past after you took the Exit at Mercer from State Highway 1.
We connect and support our community by donating to and participating in local fundraising and community events; we offer casual lunch and dinner options for locals on special occasions; and we promote unique local experiences in Waikaretu, Port Waikato, as well as the Mighty Waikato region to our guests.
As our guest numbers have grown, so has our commitment to weaving the lodge into the fabric of this community. The increase in visitors has cast a wider spotlight on our Northern Waikato region. Guests who arrive for a long weekend at Te Karaka often find themselves venturing out to Nikau Cave, surfing the black sands at Port Waikato, horse riding with our neighbours at Smitty’s Ridge, a day trip to explore Raglan, or taking on the challenging trails at Harker Reserve. The more activities the guests can enjoy, the longer they will stay.
We've also been building more opportunities with wellness practitioners, yoga instructors, helicopter operators, experienced artists and potters with open studios, surfing schools, ferry providers, and other experience providers who can bring their offerings to our guests. Each new retreat, workshop, or guided farm tour is a partnership — a way of growing together rather than growing alone.
A Station That's Always Been About More Than Farming
Te Karaka Station has been a working sheep and beef farm for as long as most locals can remember. Farm Manager James and his son Mat have spent their lives reading this land — moving stock, managing pastures, working alongside skilled dogs who know every paddock. That story of stewardship and hard work is one we're proud to share with every guest who wakes up and watches the morning muster from the dining room window.
The lodge has simply added a new chapter to that story. One that connects the farm to a wider world while keeping it anchored in what it has always been: a place where the land is respected, the pace is slower, and the people are genuine.
Looking Ahead
We are grateful — genuinely, deeply grateful — for every guest who has chosen to spend time with us. Each booking matters. Not just to us, but to the grower who supplied the salad greens, our local staff, and the small-batch distiller whose gin made your sundowner something special.
As we continue to grow, our intent remains the same: to be a good neighbour, a good partner, and a good steward of this remarkable corner of Aotearoa. To welcome the world to Waikato, and to make sure that welcome benefits everyone who calls this place home.
The road to Te Karaka Lodge winds past small schools and sleepy townships, babbling streams and bouncing lambs. We think that's part of the magic. And we're committed to keeping that magic alive — for our guests, and for the community that makes it all possible.
Come and stay. The kettle's on, the views are stunning, and there's a whole region out there just waiting to be discovered.
