When Retreats Return

Why Retreat Organisers Keep Coming Back to Te Karaka Station & Lodge

There is something particularly special about welcoming a retreat group to Te Karaka Lodge. But perhaps the greatest compliment is when they choose to come back.

September 2026 marked another wonderful month of retreats at Te Karaka Station & Lodge, as we welcomed back two returning retreat hosts: award-winning New Zealand writer Paula Morris for her Writers’ Retreat, and business mindset coach, sales trainer, and motivational speaker Natalie Tolhop for her Women's Business Retreat.

For both, this was their second year choosing Te Karaka Lodge — and we were delighted to see familiar faces returning to the farm.

A Second Writers’ Retreat with Paula Morris

Following the success of her 2025 retreat, Paula Morris returned to Te Karaka in September 2026 for another intimate Writers’ Retreat.

The retreat brought together a small group of writers for several days dedicated to writing, reading, discussing craft and sharing ideas. Away from the usual demands of work and everyday life, participants had the opportunity to concentrate on their writing while learning from Paula and connecting with other writers.

The 2026 retreat extended their duration from 2 nights to 3 nights, and once again kept intentionally small, allowing the group to make Te Karaka their own for the duration of their stay.

And this year’s retreat was sold out.

For us, seeing Paula return for a second year — and seeing another group of writers embrace the experience — reinforced something we have increasingly noticed about Te Karaka: sometimes creativity needs space.

Here, that space might be a quiet corner of the Lodge looking across the hills, a conversation over dinner, a walk through the farm between sessions, or simply a few uninterrupted hours away from the normal routine.

From Creative Retreats to Business Retreats

September also saw the return of Natalie Tolhop and her Women's Business Retreat.

While a writers’ retreat and a women in business retreat may sound very different, we have found that successful retreats often need many of the same things.

They need privacy.

They need comfortable spaces where people can gather and talk.

They need good food and somewhere people actually want to sit together after the formal programme has finished.

And, importantly, they need a change of environment.

A retreat at Te Karaka isn't about moving the office meeting to another meeting room. It is an opportunity to get the team out of their normal environment altogether.

Surrounded by farmland, rolling hills and open skies, teams have room to slow down, think differently and spend time together without the constant interruptions of the working day.

For Nathalie and her group, returning for a second year gave us the chance to welcome them back to a place they already knew — while once again tailoring the stay around what they wanted to achieve.

A Growing Home for Executive Offsites

Te Karaka Lodge is also increasingly popular for executive and senior leadership teams for private offsites. These smaller gatherings are often less about formal presentations and more about creating the right environment for strategic thinking, honest conversations and important decisions.

With the option to take over the Lodge exclusively, leadership teams can meet privately, share meals, step outside for a walk between sessions and continue conversations without the usual interruptions of an office or city hotel. Being close enough to Auckland for a convenient one- or two-night stay, yet surrounded by the quiet of a 600-hectare working farm, makes Te Karaka particularly well suited to executive offsites, leadership retreats and strategy sessions where focus and privacy matter.

Why Do Retreat Organisers Come Back?

Every retreat we host is different.

Some groups arrive with carefully structured workshops and sessions. Others intentionally leave space in their programme for conversations, walks, meals and downtime.

That flexibility is one of Te Karaka's strengths.

Located on a working farm in rural Waikato, approximately 95 kilometres from Auckland, Te Karaka Lodge feels genuinely removed from the city while still being accessible for Auckland and Waikato-based groups.

With just 10 guest rooms, the Lodge is particularly suited to intimate retreats where participants can stay, meet, eat and relax together in one place.

Groups can use our indoor spaces for workshops, presentations and discussions, then step outside for a completely different environment.

Depending on the purpose of the retreat, the programme can also include experiences such as farm walks, private farm tours, spa treatments, yoga or meditation, creative workshops and other group activities.

Or you can do very little at all.

Sometimes a long dinner, a glass of wine and a conversation overlooking the farm is exactly what a retreat needs.

More Than a Venue

One of the things we have learned from hosting retreats is that organisers aren't simply looking for accommodation and a meeting room.

They are creating an experience for their group.

That means the little things matter: having meals ready so nobody has to organise dinner, being able to change the room setup between sessions, finding a quiet space for an individual conversation, or giving everyone somewhere comfortable to relax at the end of the day.

Our team works closely with retreat organisers before arrival to understand the programme, group size, catering requirements and activities, so the Lodge can support the retreat rather than dictate it.

And because groups can book the Lodge exclusively, the experience can feel less like staying at a hotel and more like having a private country lodge for your team or community.

Your Retreat Could Look Completely Different

Paula's Writers’ Retreat and Nathalie's Women in Business retreat are two examples of what can happen here, but there is no single formula for a Te Karaka retreat.

We can host:

  • Corporate and leadership retreats

  • Strategy and planning offsites

  • Creative writing retreats and workshops

  • Wellness, yoga and mindfulness retreats

  • Art and photography workshops

  • Team-building getaways

  • Professional development workshops

  • Small community and special-interest retreats

  • Girls Weekend and Family getaways

Whether your goal is to create, plan, learn, reconnect or simply give people the space to have conversations that don't happen in the office, we can help shape the stay around your group.

Perhaps the Best Recommendation Is Coming Back

We could tell you about the quiet, the views, the food and the privacy.

But after hosting more retreats at Te Karaka, we think one of the strongest endorsements is much simpler:

our retreat organisers are coming back.

It was a pleasure welcoming Paula Morris and Nathalie back to Te Karaka Lodge for their second retreats in September 2026, and even more rewarding to see their groups enjoying the Lodge and the surrounding farm.

We hope there will be many more return visits to come.
